The Balayage Edit

Balayage and lived-in blonde on the Hibiscus Coast

Balayage is colour painted by hand onto the lengths and ends, so your hair brightens where the sun would lighten it and your roots stay soft. At Jenna Ellen Hair a half head of balayage is from $240 and a full head is from $290, plus a finishing package from $90 for the toner, root shadow and blow-dry. Hair that's never been coloured is from $390, and an express refresh between visits is from $160.

Lived-in blonde, balayage and foils: what you're actually asking for

Lived-in blonde describes the finished look: dimensional blonde that's brighter through the ends, softer at the root, and still looks intentional at week 10. Balayage is the main technique behind it. Your stylist paints lightener by hand in soft, sweeping strokes, heavier towards the ends and feathered at the top, so there's no straight line to grow out.

Most lived-in blondes at the salon also use a few fine foils around the hairline and parting for brightness where the face needs it, and a root shadow to melt the top back into your natural colour. When you book, choose balayage; the consultation decides how much of each technique your hair needs.

An express refresh (from $160) brightens existing balayage with a handful of hairline foils, a tip-out or root shadow and a gloss. It's the visit for weeks 6 to 8, when the ends have softened and you want them lifted again without a full repaint.

Half head balayage (from $240) repaints the top and sides, which covers the hair you see in the mirror and everything that shows when it's down. Full head balayage (from $290) goes right through, including the underneath, and is the choice for a brighter overall result or for hair you often wear up.

Never-been balayage (from $390) is for hair that has never been coloured. It needs the full 3 hours, a more gradual lift and a bespoke toner, and the price reflects that first appointment rather than a refresh.

Each of these is paired with a finishing package: mini blow-dry from $90, mini cut and blow-dry from $125, blow-dry from $135 or cut and blow-dry from $175.

How long balayage lasts

Because there's no regrowth line, balayage lasts as long as you're happy with the brightness. In practice the toner softens first, at around 6 to 8 weeks, and the painted sections start to sit lower at 10 to 12 weeks. Book the express refresh at week 6 to 8 and a half or full head at week 10 to 12.

Between visits, a toner and blow-dry (from $150) on its own keeps the shade where you want it, and a weekly purple shampoo keeps warmth in check.

Balayage on dark hair

Balayage on dark brown or black hair is beautiful when it's planned in stages. Dark hair lifts through red and orange on its way to blonde, so a caramel or honey balayage is achievable in 1 visit, while a cool ash or bright blonde on dark hair is usually a 2-visit plan with a treatment between them.

The consultation includes a strand test on dark or previously coloured hair, so you know what 1 sitting achieves and what a second visit adds. Dark-to-blonde transformations are quoted after that assessment rather than guessed from a photo.

What to bring to your consultation

Bring 2 or 3 photos of balayage you love, and if you can, 1 photo of the direction you'd like to steer clear of. Tell your stylist what's been on your hair in the last 2 years, including box dye. Then say how often you'd like to be in the salon: every 6 weeks, every 12, or twice a year. That last answer changes the placement more than anything else.

Prices

Every foiling and balayage service is paired with a finishing package, which covers your toner, root shadow and a styled finish. Prices are based on a 4 to 10 week regrowth; longer gaps may need extra product.

How much does balayage cost in NZ?

Salon balayage in Auckland is commonly priced from around $250 before the finish, rising with hair length and the number of sessions. At Jenna Ellen Hair a half head is from $240, a full head is from $290 and never-been balayage is from $390, each plus a finishing package from $90 that covers your toner, root shadow and blow-dry.

Is $400 a lot for a balayage?

For hair that's never been coloured, never-been balayage is from $390 plus a finishing package, and that buys a 3-hour appointment, a full hand-painted lift, a bespoke toner and a styled finish, and it grows out for 3 months. Spread across the time it lasts, it's one of the most economical colour services on the menu.

Is balayage better than highlights?

They do different jobs. Foil highlights give a brighter, more uniform blonde from the root; balayage gives a softer, sun-kissed blonde with a natural root and a longer gap between visits. The lived-in blondes we're known for usually combine a little of both.

How long will a balayage last?

The colour itself lasts 3 to 4 months before it needs a full repaint. The toner softens sooner, at around 6 to 8 weeks, which is when an express refresh or a toner and blow-dry keeps it bright.

Is lived-in blonde the same as balayage?

Lived-in blonde is the look; balayage is the main technique used to create it, usually with a root shadow and a few face-framing foils. Ask for lived-in blonde and bring photos, and the consultation decides the technique.
