Colour changes and corrections

From box dye to salon colour: what happens at your first appointment

Box dye is a strong, one-size formula that stacks up with every application, so moving from it to salon colour starts with an assessment of what's on the hair, where, and how many times. From there the route is a colour remover, a gentle lift or a fresh colour over the top. At Jenna Ellen Hair that assessment is a free in-salon consultation, and the appointment is quoted before it's booked.

Why box dye behaves differently

A box dye has to work on every head of hair that buys it, so it's built strong: a high-strength developer and a formula that deposits more pigment than most hair needs. Applied root to tip every 4 to 6 weeks, it stacks, and the ends carry 6 or 8 layers of pigment while the roots carry 1. Lightener works through those layers unevenly, which is where bands, hot roots and patchy lift come from.

Salon colour is mixed for 1 head of hair, applied where it's needed (roots only on a retouch) and toned to a target. That's the difference in a sentence, and it's why the first salon visit after box dye starts with looking rather than mixing.

The 3 questions the consultation asks

How many applications, and where? Roots, mid-lengths and ends usually carry different histories. 1 or 2 applications over otherwise natural hair is a simple job; a year of monthly root-to-tip applications is a staged one.

How long ago? Recent colour is at its strongest. Colour from 3 months ago has faded and lifts more easily.

What shade, against what natural colour? A dark box dye over naturally light hair is the classic reason people come in, and it lifts differently from a light box dye over naturally dark hair. Your stylist runs a strand test on a hidden section so you both see the answer.

The 3 routes

A colour remover. A gentle product that shrinks artificial pigment so it rinses out, without lightening your natural colour. It's the first step when the box dye is much darker than the goal, and it often reveals the warm base underneath, which is then toned or lifted in the same visit.

A gentle, staged lift. When the goal is blonde, the hair is lifted in stages over 2 to 3 visits, with a treatment between each, exactly as in the dark to blonde guide. Box-dyed hair takes the longer path because artificial pigment lifts unevenly.

A fresh colour over the top. When the goal is a similar depth or darker, a salon colour is formulated to even out the box dye and sit over it, with a gloss on the ends so the whole length reads as 1 colour. This is usually 1 visit and priced as an all-over colour ($235 to $280).

Going lighter after box dye

Patience is the tool. A staged plan with a bond treatment (Kérastase Premiere, $70) at each stage gets to blonde with the hair in good condition; a single heavy lift over layers of box dye is how hair ends up uneven and weak. The consultation tells you how many visits, and each stage is toned to be wearable.

Going darker or matching after box dye

This is the easy direction. A filler may go on first if the box dye has faded warm, and then the target shade is applied and glossed. Most clients moving from box dye to a salon brunette or a natural-looking grey coverage are done in 1 visit and back on a normal 4 to 6 week retouch rhythm afterwards.

Before your appointment

Leave the hair as it is for 2 weeks before the consultation: another box, a home stripper or a clarifying treatment in the meantime changes what the strand test shows. Bring the box, or a photo of it, and photos of where you want to end up. The colour correction guide explains what the consultation assesses, and the consultation itself is free.

Cost and time

A colour over the top is priced from the menu. A remover or a staged lift is quoted at the consultation, per visit, with the full figure before anything is booked. Single visits run 3 to 5 hours, so the front-desk iPad extends the free parking to 5 hours for them.
